In New York City, where close quarters and shared dwellings are common, the spread of bedbugs can be particularly rapid and concerning. Fortunately, the city provides a clear process for reporting bedbug infestations. This guide will walk you through the steps to file a bedbug report in New York City, helping ensure your situation is addressed promptly and effectively.

In accordance with Local Law 69 of 2017, it's imperative for residential property owners to actively participate in tracking and reporting the bedbug history of each unit. A report must be filed even if there is no history of bedbugs in your building.

It's critical to adhere to the December 31st deadline. Failure to file the report on time may result in HPD issuing a violation against your property,  and a civil penalty of $500- $5000. 

Step 1: Gather Bedbug History Information

Engage with your tenants and unit owners to compile a bedbug history for each apartment. Essential information includes:

• Any current or past bedbug infestations with the approximate date of observation.

• Steps taken to eradicate the problem, if applicable.

Step 2: Ensure Your Property Registration is Up-to-Date

Before you can file the Annual Bedbug Report, your property must be properly registered with the Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). If your registration needs updating, or if you're registering for the first time, navigate to the HPD's Building Registration page to complete this step.

Step 3: Meet the Reporting Deadline

File your Bedbug Annual Report with the HPD online between December 1st and December 31st. This report should cover the period from November of the preceding year to October of the current year, providing a near-complete annual snapshot of bedbug occurrences and actions taken.

Step 4: File the Report

Only Registered Property Owners, or Managing Agents of multiple dwellings are eligible to file a report. Start the process online, via mail, via email, or phone:
